Around the holidays, we spend a lot of time talking about what we want—new gadgets, big trips, grand gestures. There’s this whole mythology of magic and miracle, of something dazzling arriving to make everything better.
Politics works a lot like that too. Oftentimes when people talk about “what America needs,” the answers sound enormous: reform, revolution, systems change. But when you actually ask people what their community needs to make daily life easier, the answers are:
These aren’t demands for radical overhaul or political grandstanding. They’re reminders that so much of what makes life livable happens within a few miles of home.
The List
So this season, our wish for you isn’t just another thing to unwrap. It’s a moment to experience something else: the words of 9,158 Americans across the country, telling us what they “wished their community had that would make daily life easier”. It’s the present we open every day when we read stories, full of quiet wisdom and common ground, captured in Civic Pulse.
And, our hope is that you feel what we do when you read them…that so much of this country is more united than divided, more solvable than impossible, and filled with more humanity than the headlines would have you believe.

Final Thoughts
When you listen closely, you start to hear the simplicity of what people are asking for—not more, but enough. Enough safety. Enough kindness. Enough stability to build a life on.
What’s striking isn’t how divided the answers are, but how repetitive they are. Thousands of people, in wildly different places, describe the same missing pieces: a steady job, affordable groceries, working transportation, a safe place for kids, and a sense of connection.
As we wrap up 2025, here our some of our questions to hold:
What would make your community’s daily life just a little easier?
What’s one small thing that could make a big difference where you live?
And what if thriving doesn’t take a miracle but just day-in-day-out effort?
The takeaway isn’t that our problems are small. It’s that they’re specific. Tangible. Local. Things we can actually do something about.
Addressed to you, from all of us. Happy Holidays.
